I was born in Jarrow in 1956, but lived most of my childhood/teenage days in the south, near Beaconsfield, Bucks. Many of my school holidays were spent on my grandparent's small holding in West Sussex - which was always a huge treat and where I developed my love for all things rural. I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember - it was one of those subjects I really shone at in school. By the time I reached 18, art college seemed to be the most logical direction to go. The prospect of making a living out of something so closely related made sense on so many levels. I did a one year foundation course at High Wycombe, then studied for a degree in graphic design at Canterbury College of Art (1975-78). Many happy and successful years as a designer followed. A very small number of these spent working in London and the remaining up to this day, based under the broad skies of Suffolk.
My experience as a designer continues to inform my work as a fine art - landscape artist, with, I believe, well tuned approaches towards composition, contrasts, use of colour (or not), negative spaces etc.
Bright sunny mornings and evenings are my favourite times and conditions! Much of my work is produced within a limited palette which appeals to my hunger for dramatic imagery, often accentuating light v shade and the vast range of subtle, sensitive tones inbetween. I often start a piece by applying layers of watercolour and liquid charcoal as gestural marks (applied relative to the overall composition and subject matter).
I have had work exhibited with the Pastel Society of Great Britain at the Mall Galleries in 1999, 2016, 2023, 2024 and 2025. I was awarded First Prize for the Pastel Society’s Catalogue Award in 2024 with an Irish landscape. I was also one of 68 artists (from over 6,000 submissions) who’s work was shortlisted for the Derwent Art Prize 2024 and exhibited at the Oxo Tower Wharf in London (April 2024). I have also had work accepted for the Wales Contemporary Exhibition (2025) and have appeared on SkyArts 10th series of Landscape Artist of the Year (2025).
